1 de Diciembre Día Mundial Contra el Sida en Yumbo
The Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Perez, met with the organisers and campaigners behind the World AIDS Day Fundraiser activities planned for the evening of December 1st around the main plaza in the Yumbo Centre, Playa del Inglés.
The mayor said he was proud to be part of this admirable initiative to provide support and assistance to some of the most vulnerable in our society, and congratulated the group, made up primarily of foreign residents, in their unerring support for ACES – the local charity Amigos Contra El SIDA
Orlando Viera, the charity’s coordinator, joined the mayor in thanking the foreign resident LGBT community for their years of constant support helping to financially underpin their very important work, and significantly adding to their small government grants. “With the help of the people who live around, and work in, the Yumbo we are able to reach out to many more people than it would otherwise be possible to do”
John ‘Hollywood’ Barrie, who was one of the instigators of this now traditional day of solidarity at the Yumbo, said “it’s just marvelous to see the community coming together like this year after year, especially as all the donations go directly to our local charity.”
Kevin and Mark, two local entertainers, came to the town hall to represent the solidarity, particularly shown around the Yumbo, from artists and singers who entertain the gay resident, and visiting, population as well as a whole host of holiday makers at their various shows in and around the municipality’s tourist areas.
Jamie and Mario who coordinate the event are not only offering t-shirts for sale promoting the idea that we need to work together to “Fight AIDS , not people with AIDS”, and inviting you to Wrap Your Memories in Red; but are also looking into setting up a formal charitable association to better orchestrate the English speaking community’s support of ACES.
Candles will be on sale on December 1st so that a memorial ribbon of red, remembering those who have passed on, can be created for all to see. This year’s solidarity fundraiser begins at 9pm in the main square of the Yumbo, drag is advised, though not mandatory.
